"Insider Threats" An insider threat is a malicious threat to an organization that comes from people within the organization, such as employees, former employees, contractors or business associates, who have inside information concerning the organization's security practices, data and computer systems. The threat may involve fraud, the theft of confidential or commercially valuable information, the theft of intellectual property, or the sabotage of computer systems

"Employees are often said to be a company’s biggest resource. It is equally true that they are its biggest liability. Scarcely a week goes by without a company falling victim to employees turned enemies or embarrassments!  Our experience and expertise in this area makes us a great resource to help."

Robert D. Huseman
President/CEO

Companies large and small all have to deal with expansion and reduction in their employee workforce as the business and economy changes. Sometimes these are normal additions or deletions, and other times severe anger and the need for revenge is developed based on these changes.  These modifications to the number of employees will also affect the delegation or consolidation of duties. As duties change, permissions and access to specific assets should be changed as well to fit the current role of that employee. Lack of processes, to ensure that employee access is limited to systems or data that is required to do his or her job, is a major issue that most companies continue to struggle with. This problem is compounded when an employee is promoted from operations to management yet their permissions to systems are not updated to reflect their new role. Failure to remove access to sensitive assets for those employees that no longer have a legitimate business requirement increases an asset’s exposure to unauthorized disclosure or alteration. This can be a common enabler of insider attacks which is often overlooked. It is no secret that companies spend a majority of their security budget on protecting from external attacks but, “one of the toughest and most insidious problems in information security, and indeed in security in general, is that of protecting against attacks from an insider.” Typically an insider is an employee of the company that has greater access to sensitive information, a better understanding of internal processes, and knowledge of high-value targets and potential weaknesses in security!

The choice to make your business safer and less vulnerable to these vicious attacks seems like it would be so easy to make.  Unfortunately, the "It will not happen to me" attitude is far too often proven to be inaccurate.  Usually one of the biggest problems is having too much confidence in your  technology, which provides an unrealistic belief that you are adaquately protected.  The vast majority of the time, this is not the case and finding out the hard way is a tough lesson to learn.  Have your personnel been educated on what to look for and trained in how to avoid these incidents?  Has your IT Staff or MSP created a written policy with specific instructions as to what to do, who to report to and how to minimize any threats before they become rampant?  Is your Anti-virus, Anti-malware and security up to the task of stopping or even slowing down an attack?

Advanced Service Solutions has been working with business to improve safety and help make them secure for over 20 years.   We have many years of experience in selecting the best products available and we partner with the top names in the technology industry.  The cost of finding out the hard way is far greater than taking reasonable and proper precautions before anything happens.
