"Storage Solutions" -- Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. It is a core function and fundamental component of computers. The central processing unit (CPU) of a computer is what manipulates data by performing computations. In practice, almost all computers use a storage hierarchy, which puts fast but expensive and small storage options close to the CPU and slower but larger and cheaper options farther away. In computer networks, the purpose of storage and the use differs greatly depending on what the business goals are. They range from expensive Storage Area Networks which may consist of Fiber or other expensive technologies for some applications, much lower cost Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices for some other applications and even inexpensive portable storage devices (USB Drives) for others. cases. In order to provide a recommendation
for a product, we would have to do a complete review
of your needs, but in general you would only require
this complex of a solution if you are planning on
virtualizing a system with numerous host with each
running numerous virtualized servers and/or in an
environment such as a high volume database system or
others which provide excessive Input/Output.
When is a mid-range system appropriate for you?
Most of the time! The biggest reason is that
most lower end solutions do not have the
expandabiity nor advanced functionaility.
Mid-range solutions can provide tremendous
functionalities and capabilities. They can host
multiple virtualization host with multiple guest
running on each, they can suport backup solutions,
provide FTP and other application interfaces and
also be excellent application servers. The
best bang for your buck is here.
When are USB drives a good solution? Rarely if ever. They do have uses, but they have to be extremely calculated and defined. Most USB drives only have a single hard drive, have less expensive SATA drives which do not move data at high speed and are unreliable at times deopending on what environment you have placed them in.
